I heard an interesting story from a friend about a new mother who is also a smoker.
The young lady didn't quit smoking while pregnant and continues to smoke while breast feeding - even with all the data showing the dangers to a child's heath.
Women who continue to smoke while breast feeding don't have nearly as much as milk for the child, and the milk they do have tastes like cigarettes. Even so, the milk that is there offers some protection to the child from the harmful effects of nicotine, says Massachusetts General Hospital.
One study offers a terrific for mothers to stop smoking while breast feeding: Their children will sleep a lot longer and more soundly when not hyped up with nicotine-tainted milk.
