A new study says that smokers don't necessarily have to taper their smoking habits before beginning a nicotine gum regiment.
The Swiss study says that smokers who used a gum like Nicorette four weeks before their quit date did, in fact, reduce the number of cigarettes smoked by half. However, researchers said starting earlier did not make a difference in the overall outcome.
